Fatal stabbing near home of Sheboygan Mayor Ryan Sorenson
34-year-old man arrested after standoff near the mayor's residence
SHEBOYGAN — The Sheboygan Police Department responded to a fatal stabbing Friday evening that occurred feet away from the mayor’s home on the city’s south side.
Paramedics and police officers responded to the 1700 block of South 25th Street for a report of a 33-year-old Sheboygan man who had been stabbed by his 34-year-old roommate shortly before 6 PM on Friday, July 5th. The location of the incident is two homes away from Mayor Ryan Sorenson’s residence at 1811 South 25th Street in the Settlement Neighborhood. The victim summoned help from neighbors before first responders arrived. Despite lifesaving efforts at the hospital, the victim did not survive according to police.
The Wisconsin State Patrol and the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office also responded to provide assistance to the Sheboygan Police Department. While the victim was transported to a local hospital, additional paramedics were requested to the scene by police. Officers attempted to communicate with the suspect, who remained inside the home where the stabbing occurred, for several hours without any response.
Eventually, the SWAT Team used a ram on a tactical vehicle from the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office to breach the front door of 1716 South 25th Street and the suspect was taken into custody. The suspect was taken to the Sheboygan County Detention Center and is being referred to the Sheboygan County District Attorney’s Office for a charge of 1st Degree Intentional Homicide.
This is the second stabbing in 35 days in the City of Sheboygan. In that incident, the stabbing suspect, who was still armed with a knife, was shot by a Sheboygan Police officer.1 Officers were responding to a report of two men fighting at a residence in the 1400 block of Michigan Ave. After arriving, officers discovered that a 48-year-old Sheboygan man had been stabbed by another resident of the same apartment, a 32-year-old Sheboygan man.
Social media chatter about the police response included comments such as, “Sheboygan is becoming Chicago how terribly sad.” It should be noted that Sheboygan is incredibly far from becoming anything close to resembling Chicago. According to WGN 9, at least eleven people were killed and over 50 hurt in separate shootings alone on July 4th. In Sheboygan, there were no shootings or stabbings yesterday. In fact, there has only been one shooting so far this year.
The Mayor of Sheboygan does not have a security detail. The only mayor in the State of Wisconsin to have around-the-clock law enforcement protection is the Mayor of Milwaukee.2 The Milwaukee Police Department provides officers to drive the mayor as well as provide security at the mayor’s home. Between 2015 and 2020, Milwaukee spent $2.8 million giving its officials security details.3
