Get to know Sheboygan’s newest green space
City Green is a unique arts and entertainment green space in Downtown Sheboygan
SHEBOYGAN — The City of Sheboygan is opening a new public green space to encourage more community engagement and interaction in a natural environment.
Located on the corner of North 7th Street and New York Avenue in Downtown Sheboygan, City Green is a unique arts and entertainment green space that’s designed as meet-up space for family, friends, and neighbors. This open-air natural environment connects the public to thought-provoking art, original live performances, and inspirational activities for the body and soul.
It’s a natural pathway between a vibrant art district and a thriving downtown scene.
In the past, the Boston Store occupied the lot that is now home to City Green.
“While it was great to have the Boston Store downtown, there was always a connectivity issue moving pedestrians and traffic from 8th Street to activities on 7th Street near the John Michael Kohler Arts Center,” said Chad Pelishek, Director of Planning and Development for the City of Sheboygan. “With the departure of the Boston Store, there was a real opportunity that we seized, utilizing the space connectively and as an open-air venue that enhances the arts culture of the area.”
Residents and visitors alike can expect to see the fourth year of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center Levitt Amp Concert Series, featuring original artists most Thursdays during the summer. The annual Mid-summer Festival of the Arts, hosted by the Arts Center, will spill from the streets onto the City Green space as well. Other new community activities planned for City Green include Monday and Wednesday night yoga classes and Tuesday and Thursday morning kids’ yoga classes, hosted by Sheboygan Community Recreation.
Mead Public Library will host family night on select Tuesdays in June and July, featuring family-friendly activities, and local Craft 30 microbrew pub will expand its Summer Solstice Festival between its South 10th Street location and City Green. “Craft 30 will showcase microbrew vendors and samples with live music at City Green, utilizing shuttles to connect more music and craft brews at their current location,” added Amy Wilson, President and CEO of Visit Sheboygan, Inc. “It’s a great way to capitalize on the microbrew craze with an inviting outdoor festival in the heart of downtown.”
Visit Sheboygan will be hosting two family-friendly Picnic on the Green events at City Green. The first will be Saturday, July 28th and second on Saturday, August 18th from 4 PM to 7 PM. Sheboygan Squared is working with area restaurants to offer a picnic-style, casual menu to go.
“We’re excited so many community organizations came to the table to activate the City Green space, and encourage the community to take advantage of some wonderful programs,” said Pelishek. “City Green will grow as an inspirational outdoor venue and walkthrough. We’re already working to create arts sculptures that double as children’s play equipment.”
