Charcoal Inn South closes after 37 years
SHEBOYGAN — The owner of Charcoal Inn announced the closure of his south side Sheboygan restaurant last month.
Scott Prescher, owner of the Charcoal Inn restaurants, announced the heartbreaking news in August. “It’s with a sad heart that due to unsustainable staff shortages we are closing Charcoal Inn South,” said the owner. “We do not have the staff to provide the proper level of service to our customers.” It is unclear if the closure is permanent or temporary and attempts to reach Prescher were unsuccessful.
Prescher noted the Charcoal Inn North restaurant, located at Calumet Drive and Geele Avenue in Sheboygan, remains open Tuesday through Saturday from 6 AM to 2 PM. Normally, the north side location would be open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 AM until 7 PM.
David Gordon, who was a regular at the south side restaurant, died in June 2020 after a brief illness. He ate daily at Charcoal Inn South and was a staple in the King Park neighborhood along with his long-time friend David Giuliani, who also frequented the restaurant. Both men were members of St. Peter Claver Parish and avid fans of the Green Bay Packers.
The two restaurants are popular for their steak sandwiches and homemade desserts.
Charcoal Inn South was purchased by Roger Prescher and his son Scott. The restaurant, located at 1313 South 8th Street, was remodeled and opened in the summer of 1984 with astounding success. In 1987, the Preschers purchased a small restaurant at Calumet Drive and Geele Avenue and opened Charcoal Inn North.
Roger’s wife and Scott’s mother, Marilyn Prescher, passed away in January 2017.
